August 1 sees a major box office face-off with the release of two notable Bollywood films—Son of Sardaar 2, starring Ajay Devgn, and Dhadak 2, led by Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Both films are sequels/spiritual follow-ups, aiming to tap into nostalgia and fresh storytelling alike.
Son of Sardaar 2 brings back Ajay Devgn’s much-loved character from the 2012 original. The film sticks to its core formula—high-octane action, humour, and Punjabi swag. With an ensemble cast, it’s designed to be a mass entertainer.
Directed by Shazia Iqbal, Dhadak 2 shifts away from the tone of its predecessor, taking a more intense and socially rooted approach to romance. It’s not a direct sequel but a spiritual successor, trying to carve its own space with original storytelling.
While Dhadak 2 brings emotional depth with a fresh lead pair and new direction, Son of Sardaar 2 boasts a star-studded supporting lineup including Mrunal Thakur, Sanjay Mishra, Ravi Kishan, and a posthumous cameo by Mukul Dev
Both films will face stiff competition not only from each other but also from the continued box office success of Saiyaara and the devotional film Mahavatar Narsimha, making this Friday a crowded one for moviegoers.
Despite being postponed by a week to avoid overlap, Son of Sardaar 2 is still grappling with limited screen availability and a saturated release calendar, which might affect its opening weekend performance.
Dhadak 2 has the backing of Dharma Productions and aims to impress critics with substance, while Son of Sardaar 2 banks on legacy appeal and fan service. The coming days will reveal which strategy hits the mark with audiences.
